Lets run through studs and duds from Week Four...EDTShareTweetShareShareWinners and losers from Week Four of Twins Spring TrainingWillians is the hero that Twins fans need and deserve.Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsThe Minnesota Twins play for real this coming Thursday, and that means that this our final weekly recap in Spring Training.A lot happened this past week, but the transactions that occurred were much more newsworthy than any of the on-the-field stats. That said, its important to note whos playing well and who isnt as the team prepares to head north. The 25-man roster doesnt have a ton of intrigue surrounding it, although there are some questions as to whether or not the Twins go with a fourth outfielder and/or a five-man bench or if they weigh the pitching side of things a bit more heavily.Well have plenty more coverage regarding the roster decision throughout the week here at Twinkie Town, but for now, lets take a look at which regulars stood out over the past seven days and which ones ... didnt. All statistics current heading into play on Sunday, March 24.Winners through Week FourJason Castro (C): .286/.364/.679 (8-for-28, 3 HR, 2 2B, 7 RBI)In all likelihood, Castro was always going to be the starting catcher on this team.Cult hero status notwithstanding, a healthy Castro is the superior defensive player to Willians Astudillo and more of a known quantity on offense, at least when it comes to supplying a bit of power to the bottom of the order.Castro was able to answer any questions about his availability as spring training wore on. He didnt play much early on as he worked his way into shape, but finished with a fantastic .286/.364/.679 line and tallied two doubles and three home runs.Thats more than enough to make the coaching staff feel good about penciling him in as the starting catcher come Thursday.Willians Astudillo (C/UT): .295/.304/.477 (13-of-44, 2 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI)That said, Astudillo still had a solid spring. He played all over the diamond and held his own with the bat, which is exactly what he needed to do.Its important to note that his decent line came against largely minor league-caliber competition, at least according to Baseball References measure; Astudillos Opponent Quality clocked in at 6.7, which falls just shy of Double-A quality opponents. But that said, Astudillos 2018 campaign, combined with a solid spring, should be enough to land him on the 25-man roster this week.Jonathan Schoop (2B): .326/.370/.535 (14-of-43, 3 2B http://www.royalsfanproshop.com/authentic-ryan-goins-jersey , 2 HR, 4 RBI)This is simply the classic case of a veteran player who had a down-year offensively last year and is expected to bounce back, and his spring performance has been good enough for some optimism.Schoop didnt play much early and wasnt very good when he played, but has come on strong of late with five extra-base hits and an OPS of .904.Losers through Week TwoMarwin Gonzalez: .115/.179/.115 (3-for-26, 1 RBI, 13 K)This the inverse of Schoops winner status above; Gonzalez had a year that wasnt quite up to the standard hes set back in 2017, yet hes expected to be a key member of the Twins lineup in 2019.After signing late, Gonzalez was eased into game action and has scuffled thus far. He has struck-out in nearly half of his plate appearances, has only two walks, and only three singles on his ledger thus far.Gonzalez will open the season as the every-day third baseman as Miguel Sano recovers from his heel injury, so the Twins will be relying on the former to regain some of his previous form so that he can hold down the fort until Sano returns in a few weeks.Pitching StaffTeam ERA: 5.16Four of five starting pitchers with ERAs above 4.00.Spring training pitching stats are always a bit inflated you know, the whole pitching-is-behind-the-hitting thing. (For some context, the MLBs best team ERA this spring has Houstons 3.53, and its the only team ERA to be under 4.00.)But the Twins have taken things a step further, clocking in with an ERA of 5.16, tied for No. 20 in the league.Of the likely five starting pitchers in this years rotation, only Michael Pineda has managed a sub-4.00 ERA, putting up a 3.52 in 15 1鈦? innings. Jose Berrios has been respectable, managing a 4.43 ERA in 20 1鈦? innings. The rest of the rotation has struggled, although Martin Perez has been lauded for a clear uptick in velocity, which could go a long way as the teams fifth starter. Most of the bullpen has been fairly up-and-down, with newcomer Blake Parker (3.00 ERA in 9 innings) and Trevor May (2.35 ERA in 7 2鈦? innings) opening the most eyes. Others, including Addison Reed (10 earned runs given up in just 5 1鈦? innings) and Taylor Rogers (5.40 ERA in 8 1鈦? innings) have been less impressive. All things considered, there is plenty of noise in a spring training team ERA of 5.16. But its still something to keep an eye on as the pitching staff is already the largest question mark on a healthy Twins squad in 2019.Looking ahead to...final cutsThe Twins play a day game on Monday and split-squad day games on Tuesday before enjoying a single day off on Wednesday. Then, the home opener against the Cleveland Indians at 3:10 CT on Thursday.Well have reaction to the additional roster moves were all waiting on as they come available, but there shouldnt be any major surprises. That said, anything can happen... Of course it does.Happy New Years Eve Eve! For those of you planning to skip the festivities (and, really, theres not much point if you arent between the ages of 21-25), heres some baseball-ish articles for your perusal. Between this and Froggys usual Monday collection, you should be good to go...pdx_twins_fan found an interesting ESPN tidbit on new Twin Jonathan Schoop, who speaks four languages. This is not unusual for people on the Caribbean island of Curacao; its a former Dutch colony, English is widely used, most TV is from nearby Spanish-speaking Venezuela, and the island tongue classifies as its own separate thing. Kevin Baxter describes how, since 2000, Curacao has produced an inordinate number of big-leaguers. The whole island is about the size of Ramsey County, and has far fewer people. Get with it, Saint Paul. After Minnesota signed Schoop, and before they signed Nelson Muntz Cruz, veteran CBS Sports scribe Jonah Keri suggested the Twins could surprise people this year. Predictions arent my fave, so what I liked better was this interview with Keri by Chris D. Davies of SB Nations Cleveland site. Keri, a Canadian, wrote a book about why Montreal lost the Expos; he talks about that here, and his attempts to avoid Haut Tayks when describing the whole sordid affair. You wont agree with him about everything, yet you do have to respect his professionalism.Last winters dry free-agent market has a lot of writers currently concerned about the same big teams always competing for rings Frank White Jersey , while smaller-salaried clubs sell off veterans for prospects. Jon Tayler is dismayed by Arizona dumping slugger Paul Goldschmidt; Grant Brisbee feels similarly about Seattles teardown. Jacob Shafer believes even more teams should be tanking. Michael Baumann argues that this trend presents an opportunity for team executives willing to take risks rather than go the safe route everyone else is following; makes sense to me, as even sports executives who play it careful get fired eventually. In darker executive-firing news, Seattle has a rather ugly court case involving their former director of high performance Lorena Martin, who was placed on leave in October and fired in November after stating on social media that the team displayed hugely hostile sexist/racist behavior. The Mariners say she was a terrible employee and claim unnamed staffers who were in a position to know can refute all of Martins allegations. The courts will settle this, but I speak from experience that if your former employer wants to find people wholl slam you, they can.Former Marlins president David Samson drunkenly told Miami clubgoers how happy he was embracing their hatred of the stadium deal (there is cussing):In a rather strange story, MLB donated a few thousand bucks to some blatantly bigoted Mississippi Senate candidate (the bigot won, narrowly). When word of the paltry donation came out, MLB hastily asked for its $5K back. Beyond The Box Scores Daniel R. Epstein explained why this snafu probably had nothing to do with MLB being fond of bigot Senators, and everything to do with maintaining friends on all sides in Washington. More recently, some politicians are threatening to undo MLBs recent international signing deal with Cuba; as Craig Calcaterra writes, anybody have any popcorn?Meanwhile, Jose Canseco says he wants to run for President.Last March, we looked at the Saint Paul Saints and their legislative lobbying over a proposed minimum-wage increase, saying this might bankrupt the team. That increase is now law in St. Paul, to be phased in over several years. It does grant the Saints an exemption, but only for players on the roster (most of whom make less than dirt). The other staff will be paid minimum wage. Quite rightly so, if you consider this typically demanding job description.A rather dodgily-named website called Booze Traveler had 12 Surprising Features of Your Favorite Baseball Stadiums. Youll know most of them. What you wont know about are the bras hidden inside San Franciscos outfield decor.A good article I missed in October: Preserving Negro League History Has Never Been Easier, Or Harder from The Smithsonian. While more and more statistical data is available all the time, much original reporting on the games and players has been lost, as for years the subject was ignored by many historians. A director at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City estimates only 200 surviving players are left today. And, finally, one from the wrong sport. NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri always had a powerful leg but no accuracy; he learned accuracy from a coach who uses a wheelchair and has never kicked a football in his life. This man really wanted to work for a football team, so he watched endless hours of videotape on kicking form. Now hes considered the leagues top expert. One of those tales thats either inspiring or which reminds you how youve never really accomplished anything...Anyhoo, thats a bunch of browser windows I can close now! Stay safe Monday night remember, you may be sober, but not every other driver on the road will be. And happy 2019!
