Winnipeg Jets 3 Detroit Red Wings 2 (Shootout) – A lot of interesting statistics out of this win. For the Jets it was their second straight shootout win, the third straight extra time loss for the Red Wings and in the last 10 games that the Wings have gone to extra time at home, they have not been able to get the extra point. Andrew Ladd again had the shootout winner. The Jets are now 4-1 in the shootout this season with Ladd getting the winner in the last three. (Dallas, San Jose, Detroit). Ladd is five for five in the shootout this year and going back to last year is seven for seven. Jussi Jokinen holds the NHL record with nine straight, Jarret Stoll has eight, then Ladd at seven. Ondrej Pavelec, brilliant in the game, stopped two of three in the shootout, and has now stopped eight of the last nine. Goaltending Coach Wade Flaherty feels patience is the key for Pavelec. “The shootout is a game of chicken, who will bite first. Hes more aggressive, holding his ground and as a result not folding into his net. Hes more relaxed.” For the first time this season the Jets have won three straight, and have won four of five to improve their record to 9-9-2 and move into fifth place in the Central Division. Bryan Little celebrated his birthday by opening the scoring in the game. The last three times the Jets have scored the first goal, Little has been the shooter. It was his team leading 11th goal of the year upping his totals to 3-2-5 in the last three games, 6-4-10 in the last eight and 8-4-12 in the last 11. Andrew Ladd picked up an assist on the goal giving him 2-7-9 in the last seven games. But it was a great pass from Blake Wheeler that Little converted. Pavel Datsyuk on a power play tied the game, the goal coming on Mark Scheifeles first NHL penalty. Red Wings outshot the Jets 16-8 in the first. No goals and no penalties in fast paced second, Detroit outshooting Winnipeg 10-9. Jets took the lead in the third, with Zach Bogosian getting his first of the year, assists to Evander Kane and Olli Jokinen.. Then the Jets ran into penalty trouble. Wheeler went for tripping, and on the penalty kill Kanes stick came up on Mikael Samuelson and for the fourth time this season the Jets were down two men. Datsyuk showed his magic hands again, knocking a James Wright clearing attempt out of mid-air to keep the puck in the Jets zone, and then putting a loose puck home to tie the game. The goal came one second after the penalty to Wheeler expired, allowing Kane to come out of the box as well. Jets are four for four this season when shorthanded two players. Wings outshot the Jets 16-2 in the third but as he was throughout the game, Pavelec was terrific. “Pavelec put his best foot forward and really helped us win,” commented Coach Claude Noel post game. The Jets got a power play in overtime but could not score, sending the game to the shootout. Pavelec challenged Datsyuk who fired wide, Devin Setoguchi scored and is now 9/19 in his career, Daniel Alfredson scored to tie the shootout, Ladd converted and is now 11/21 in his career, then Pavelec sealed the deal stopping Todd Bertuzzi. It was Ladds sixth career shootout winner. Final shots were 43-21 in favour of Detroit. Pavelec has now stopped 112 of his last 118 shots for three wins in his last three starts, for a save percentage of .949. “It was a hard road game,” continued Coach Noel. “Their speed and skill gave us trouble in our end. Its a hard place to win. We were in good shape going into the third and even though we were outshot our attitude was tremendous. We are happy with four wins in five games. You never really see a streak coming, but you can see the attitude of your team change. Our team, the way we are, we need a lot of “A” games to have success. We stuck together. Team is coming together. Now we just keep building. We are confident in the shootout.” A busy and difficult schedule continues for the Jets. Servia was eliminated in that round and will start 12th. "We tried to make more changes to get the balance in the car better and then tried some bigger ones for qualifying," Rahal said.
