1. USA TODAY (VIA DETROIT FREE PRESS): Kevin Allen reports the strong performance of Atlanta Thrashers forward Marian Hossa powering his club to an upset win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday made it appear as though he were auditioning for the Wings. Allen believes the Wings might be interested in Hossa if the Thrashers shop him by the deadline but suggests the Wings might not have the assets to land him.
3. Questions to ponder as Hossa rumors swirl by Ansar Khan Thursday January 17, 2008, 1:13 AM
Khan: It seems the only way the Wings could afford Thrashers star Marian Hossa would be as a rental. With the Marian Hossa-to-Detroit rumor mill churning, here's some questions to consider:
Q. Why would Atlanta, in the thick of the playoff race, trade one of its best players?
A. Contract talks with Hossa, an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, are reportedly going nowhere, and the Thrashers might not want to risk losing him for nothing. However, it's extremely important for Atlanta to make the playoffs, so you have to believe they would want someone who can help them now more so than draft picks and prospects, which does a general manager no good if his job might be in jeopardy if he doesn't win now.
Q. What would the Wings need to part with to get Hossa?
A. It depends on if they're getting him as a rental or looking to sign him long-term. I'd be shocked if they traded Valtteri Filppula, even for a player of Hossa's caliber, so I don't see Filppula going anywhere. I'm sure they're not looking to move Jiri Hudler, but if that (and draft picks/prospect) is what it takes to get Hossa, you'd have to consider it. They're not going to unload a top prospect like Jimmy Howard or Jakub Kindl for a rental but might for a star player they can get signed to an extension. But, as mentioned before, unless the Thrashers go in the tank over the next five weeks, they're probably going to want immediate help in any trade. Maybe a third team would be involved.
Q. Do the Wings have the future salary cap space to afford a player like Hossa?
A. This might be the key question. Let's say the cap ($50.3 million this season) jumps to $56 million in two years. Here's a look at what the Wings' cap commitments would be in 2009-10:
Lidstrom $7.4 million Zetterberg $7 million (projected) Datsyuk $6.7 million Rafalski $6 million Kronwall $3 million Filppula $2.5 million (projected) Cleary $2.5 million (projected) Holmstrom $2.25 million Hudler $2 million (projected) Draper $1.6 million Franzen $1.5 million (projected) Osgood $1.4 million Howard $1 million (projected) Lilja $1 million (projected) Maltby $833,000 Ericsson $800,000 (projected) Lebda $650,000
Many of these are rough projections, but that's close to $48 million for 17 players. Hossa will command at least $7 million. That brings us to $55 million for 18 players. That leaves $1 million for five more players and that doesn't include a cushion for injuries or mid-season acquisitions. Of course, it would take one or two of the players on this list to get Hossa, which would reduce the cap number, but the numbers still wouldn't add up. They would have five players making $6 million or more, and that would be tough to pull off.
It seems the only way the Wings could afford Hossa would be as a rental. They're not going to give up a lot for a rental. Chances are, others teams would be willing and able to part with more assets.
